Your HVAC system’s outdoor cabinet uses a powerful fan to draw cool air from the bottom and sides of the unit, which it then uses to disperse warm air through the top of the cabinet. With this setup, it’s not hard to see how fallen leaves can cause problems for your system. Leaves that pile up at the bottom of the unit can block airflow, making it difficult for your HVAC to do its job.

Potential Problems

• Obstructed furnace intake and exhaust pipes: Most furnaces have intake or exhaust pipes leading to the outside of the home. They are typically fitted with screens to keep out wildlife. However, a screen will not prevent blockages caused from leaves or other debris.
• Clogged compressor: Leaves entering the compressor can cause problems with your AC system. Leaves or debris reduce airflow, clog condenser coils and invite mold and bacteria growth. If you use a heat pump for heating instead of a furnace, a clogged compressor will cause more immediate problems. It will mean colder indoor temperatures, higher heating costs, and a lot of wear and tear on the system.
