Are you piling on the layers and the blankets, hoping to delay turning on the heat as long as possible? In Ohio, fall is one of those crazy seasons where each day can look (and feel) a bit different. Temperatures are certainly cooler than summer, but some days can really leave you shivering, especially at night. You’re probably enjoying some energy savings since you turned off your air conditioning and just hate to turn on the heat quite yet. But even when you do have to flip the switch and put that furnace to use, we at Allied Services, Inc. can pass along a few tips for saving money while heating your Dayton, OH home.

1. Allow natural light to do its job.

During the day, be sure to open up curtains in rooms where the sun hits. This natural light can provide added warmth to your home at no extra cost to you.

2. Look for drafts.

Do you have doors or windows that seem to be letting in a cool draft? These seemingly small leaks can cause your HVAC to work overtime and end up costing you more on your utility bill. Do your best to seal off drafts, either by shutting curtains, applying window coverings, or using weatherstripping.

3. Make sure your furnace or heat pump is working properly.

If you haven’t had your HVAC serviced, you may want to schedule a heating inspection with Allied Services, Inc. Our team can make sure your heating unit is working properly and take care of any necessary heat pump or furnace repairs.

4. Adjust your thermostat.

Don’t turn up your thermostat any higher than necessary. Aim for the lowest temperature comfortable for you and your family. If you aren’t home for an extended time, you may want to drop your thermostat even lower for additional savings.
