The kids are back in school and fall is right around the corner, but here in the Midwest, we haven’t escaped the heat just yet. In fact, temperatures are soaring into the 90’s and you may be finding yourself struggling to stay comfortable in your Dayton, OH, home. To get you through these last few weeks of heat, your friends at Allied Services, Inc. has a list of three things you can do to help keep your home cool.

Keeping Your House Cool in Extreme Heat

1. Get an AC Tune-Up

Even though summer is almost over, it’s not too late to have your air conditioner tuned-up by a professional. A member of our team will come out and inspect your unit to make sure it is running efficiently and perform any maintenance it may need. We’ll check the thermostat, change the filter, check refrigerant levels and system pressures, clean the coils, and more. Your air conditioner will feel brand new by the time we’re done with it, and you will be cool and comfortable until fall.

2. Utilize Fans

Another way to make sure your home is keeping cool is by making sure your AC isn’t doing all the work. Installing fans around you home is a great way to increase air flow and cool hard-to-reach areas. If you’re using ceiling fans, make sure the blades are clean and turn counterclockwise to circulate the cool air downward.

3. Close Your Blinds

Did you know that up to 30% of unwanted heat in your home is coming through your windows, even if they’re closed? The greenhouse effect means that sunlight and heat enter your home but then cannot escape. So, even though it can be pleasant to let the sunshine in during the day, keeping your blinds closed can lower the mid-day temperature of your home by up to 20 degrees. If your home starts to feel too cave-like, you can still open the blinds on the windows that are not in direct sunlight.
