How to Avoid Hot and Cold Spots in Your Home

Heating your home through the winter can be a frustrating experience. One room may feel freezing while another feels like a tropical oasis. Temperatures may even vary in the same room, with random hot or cold spots in different corners. At Allied Services, Inc., we understand that you want your entire house to be at a comfortable temperature, not just a few rooms. That’s why today we’re discussing how to balance the air in your home to improve air circulation, increase energy efficiency, and enhance the overall performance of your heating and air conditioning system.

Avoid Placing Electronics Near the Thermostat

Electronics can put out a lot of heat and make your thermostat think the room is warmer than it really is. Even though most appliances and electronic devices are made with technology that reduces heat, things like televisions, video game consoles, and other appliances still emit heat as a by-product. This may be why your living room feels warm, but your bedrooms do not.

Check for Drafts

Drafts are often to blame for cold spots in your home. Even if your furnace is running efficiently, it won’t be able to combat the cold air that is seeping in through the cracks. We recommend caulking along all of your baseboards on exterior walls, and around all of your window frames. Additionally, there are several winterizer type products available at local hardware stores that can help ensure your home is sealed properly against drafts.

Prevent Airflow Restrictions

Finally, make sure you never cover registers with furniture or items that will restrict air flow. When you block a vent with furniture, your system has to work harder. Ideally, a vent need 18 inches of space to do its job of supplying a free flow of air. Rearrange your furniture and hem your curtains to provide your vents with the space they need. If they are still blocked, invest in a few magnetic air deflectors to point the air away from nearby furniture.

Follow these tips to keep the air in you home balanced and comfortable all winter long.
