Air Conditioner Freeze Ups?

We’ve all been there: it’s a hot day in July and you realize that your AC is blowing warm air and, when you head outside to check on your unit, you find it’s frozen. So why does this happen and what can be done about it? Your friends at Allied Services, Inc. are discussing air conditioner freeze ups today!

Why Freeze Ups Happen

The most common reason for your air conditioner to freeze up is lack of airflow. An air conditioner works by taking the warm air from inside your home, cooling it, and blowing it back into your home. If something stops the warm air from blowing over the coils inside your unit, then the coils can become too cold and freeze up. The most common causes for this happening are a collapsed duct, a bad blower motor, or a clogged air filter.

What You Can Do

To prevent this problem from occurring, it’s important to take good care of your air conditioner. Start by changing your air filter regularly and using a good quality filter. Because a clogged air filter slows down the airflow, it can easily cause your unit to freeze, even if everything else is in good working order. However, if your unit does freeze up, your first step should be to turn the thermostat off. You don’t want to continue asking your air conditioner for cold air that it isn’t able to produce. Next, leave your fan on to help start melting the ice and thereby reducing the problem.

Call in the Pros

Turning off your thermostat and letting your fan run will help your unit start to de-ice. However, this is a serious problem that could cause damage to your system if the cause isn’t found and corrected by a professional. If you’re in the Dayton, OH, area, contact your friends at Allied Services today at (937) 269-5059. We’ll diagnose the problem and get your air conditioner back in good working order.
