5 Winter HVAC Energy Tips

Looking for ways to heat your home and save some money on your winter utility bills? Allied Services, Inc. wants to help you maximize your HVAC system’s efficiency. Here are some great tips from ENERGY STAR (for the full list and more tips, check out the ENERGY STAR website).

1. Check and change your air filter.

Changing your air filters regularly is important for your HVAC to run at its best. ENERGY STAR explains, “A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool—wasting energy. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system—leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure.” Aim to change your HVAC filters monthly—or every three months at the max.

2. Get a yearly HVAC tune-up.

You can avoid seasonal HVAC woes by hiring a heating and cooling expert to take an annual look at your system. Doing so can make sure your HVAC is running its best.

3. Invest in a programmable thermostat.

Installing a programmable thermostat is a good energy investment for your home. Energy Star says that a properly installed programmable thermostat (at the right settings) can “save you about $180 every year in energy costs.” Be sure to set your thermostat at a lower temperature during periods when you’re not home or at night when everyone is in bed.

4. Consider upgrading your HVAC equipment.

If your heating and cooling system is at least 10 years old, have an Dayton HVAC professional take a look at it to see whether you could benefit from an upgrade. Newer ENERGY STAR models can save you money, letting you heat your home more efficiently year after year.

5. Ensure your air ducts are properly sealed.

Many people’s homes lose a ton of heat as hot air tries to make its way from the furnace or heat pump to the home. You want to make sure these air ducts are sealed and well-insulated. If you’re not sure what to look for, you can read ENERGY STAR’s brochure on duct sealing or contact an HVAC professional to do it for you.
