3 Tips on How to Use Your HVAC Unit to Alleviate Allergies

Summer is coming to an end, but it still could be a month or two before Ohio residents see the first frost and begin to feel some relief from allergies. This has been a particularly difficult summer for allergy sufferers, so any relief would be welcome at this point. Did you know that you can use your HVAC system to reduce allergens in your home? According to the heating and cooling experts at Allied Services, Inc., there are a few simple steps you can take to use your HVAC system to alleviate those pesky allergies.

1. Use High-Quality Filters

The best way to improve the quality of air in your home is with your air filters. Filters are measured in MERVs, a unit of measure of the level of particle filtration. We recommend using filters with a MERV rating of 10 or higher during allergy season, because they are better at trapping smaller particles. You should also be diligent in changing your air filters every 3 months as a general rule, and more often if you have pets or a mold and dampness problem in your home.

2. Clean Around Your Unit

HVAC systems pull in the surrounding air and circulate it throughout your home. To make sure that the air being pulled in is as clean as possible, we recommend frequently checking your outdoor unit and removing debris from around it. You also need to clean around your indoor unit, to keep dust and debris away, the air clean, and your unit working efficiently.

3. Maintain the Right Level of Humidity

When the level of humidity in your home is too high or too low, it can cause discomfort and heighten allergies. A humidity level that is too high can allow mold to grow, while a low humidity level can lead to dry skin and clogged pores. By upgrading your system or using a humidifier throughout your home, you will always be sure that the level of humidity in your home is just right!

To ensure that your HVAC system is running efficiently, you should have it maintained by a professional. This will increase your air quality and reduce allergens in your home, while saving you money in the long run.
