3 Tips for Summer HVAC Maintenance

This year, summer in Ohio has looked a little different. We’re having less public events and more family gatherings with limited guest lists. With the Fourth of July just around the corner, it’s likely that you and your family won’t be headed to a festival this year; instead, you may be planning a cookout. With this in mind, it’s important to make sure your cooling system is operating smoothly to keep your guests comfortable and your home at a safe temperature as the outdoor temperatures continue to rise. Your friends at Allied Services, Inc. have put together three quick tips to make sure your HVAC unit keeps humming all summer long.

1. Change Your Air Filter

Unfortunately, for many homeowners, air filters are “out of sight, out of mind” and they only get changed once a year. However, you should be checking your filter each month to make sure it isn’t full of contaminants. Your air conditioner will be able to run much more efficiently with a clean filter. Also, don’t forget that if you have pets, you’ll need to check it even more often as the dander will add to the contaminants.

2. Check Vents and Registers

The vents and registers in your home should never be blocked or shut. Make sure all carpets, rugs, and furniture are moved away from your vents. Also, it’s a myth that shutting the vents in one room will increase the air output in others. Instead, it will actually create performance issues with your HVAC system. If would like to shut off cooling to unused rooms, consider investing in a zoning system which will allow you to reduce energy waste while still ensuring proper HVAC performance.

3. Check Outdoor Equipment

While we never recommend performing your own HVAC maintenance, you can make sure that the area around your outside unit is well cared for. Brush away any grass clippings and debris which have gathered on the unit, and trim away any vegetation. Finally, never store any outdoor furniture or other items around the unit.

To keep your home comfortable all summer long, be sure to follow these tips and schedule HVAC service with Allied Services, Inc.
