3 Signs You Need a New Air Conditioner

In the summer, Dayton homeowners depend on their AC unit to provide cool relief from the scorching hot weather. To ensure that your cooling system is running properly, it’s important that a technician performs necessary repairs and annual maintenance. However, there’s only so much that can be done for a system that’s reaching the end of its service life. Here are some telltale signs you need an AC replacement:

  1. Equipment Age: The average air conditioning unit lasts between 10 and 12 years. Even systems that have received professional maintenance every year will eventually wear out. If your air conditioner is reaching a decade’s worth of service life, then it’s time to look for an updated model.
  2. Humidity Problems: Your air conditioner’s job isn’t solely based on controlling the temperature. One of your AC’s biggest responsibilities is keeping your home from becoming too stuffy by regulating humidity levels. If you’ve noticed that your home environment feels like a sauna, it could be related to old equipment that no longer dehumidifies your house effectively. This can also lead to moisture-related issues, such as mold and mildew.
  3. High Electric Bill: One of the most obvious signs that you need an AC replacement is if your electric bills have dramatically increased this summer. Not only do older models have fading efficiency, but they weren’t built to comply with Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio’s minimum standards. Today’s units have SEER ratings of 13-24; whereas, decade-old equipment likely has 10 SEER or less.
