Space Heaters

How to Safely Use a Space Heater

Space heaters can be a convenient way to add some extra heat to your home this winter, but, if used incorrectly, they can be very dangerous. According to our friends at ESFi.org, more than 65,000 home fires can be attributed to heating equipment each year. These fires result in countless injuries and deaths, and millions of dollars of property damage. The heating and cooling experts at Allied Services, Inc., want you to keep your home and family warm and safe this winter by using space heaters correctly.

Safety Tips

  • Always read warning labels and manufacturer’s instructions before using a space heater.
  • Do not use the heater if the cord is frayed, worn, or damaged.
  • Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn it off when leaving a room or going to sleep, and never leave it alone with children or pets.
  • Space heaters should only be used for supplemental heating. Do NOT use them for purposes such as thawing pipes, cooking food, warming bedding, or drying clothes.
  • Make sure that smoke alarms are installed on each floor of your home, and outside of sleeping areas.
  • Never use power strips or extension cords to plug in a space heater. Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, and don’t plug anything else into the outlet being used for the heater.
  • Place heaters on level, flat surfaces. Make sure that they are at least 3 feet away from furniture, fabric, paper, walls, or doorways.
