How to Deal with Pet Dander

For most homeowners, pets are a part of the family. We all love our faithful companions and all the joy they bring to our lives. Unfortunately, they bring more than joy into our homes – they also bring dirt, excess hair, and dander. Pet allergies are caused by dander, and if you have dogs or cats, dander is constantly circulating throughout your home, and may be affecting your family’s overall health. That’s why our team at Allied Services, Inc. has put together a quick guide to dealing with pet dander in your home. So, instead of suffering, or getting rid of your animals, you can learn to live together harmoniously.

What Is Dander?

Many people assume that sneezing, itchy eyes, or runny noses are caused by pet hair. However, the hair is just the vehicle for the dander. Dander is made up of microscopic flecks of skin that are shed by cats, dogs, rodents, and birds – and really any animal with fur or feathers. So, even if you are diligent about cleaning up after your pets, dander can linger for a very long time, clinging to carpet, furniture, bedding, clothes, or even walls. It can also make its way into your home’s air ducts, where it circulates throughout your home anytime the furnace or air conditioner runs.

How Does Dander Affect Me?

Sensitivity to dander varies from person to person, but for those with allergies triggered by pet dander, respiratory symptoms can be triggered. Most people with allergies will experience congestion, sneezing, runny nose, wheezing, itchy eyes, or rashes. However, some people who are exposed continuously over long periods of time may develop chronic issues like asthma.

What Can I Do?

If someone in your household is suffering from pet allergies, don’t worry! You don’t need to get rid of your pet, as there are several steps you can take to reduce pet dander in your home. Make sure you regularly clean your carpets, furniture, and curtains. Dust surfaces often, and declutter where possible so pet dander has fewer surfaces to stick to. Also, be sure to bathe your pet regularly so any excess dander goes down the drain instead of into the air. Finally, have your air ducts professionally cleaned at least once a year to remove any built-up pet dander.

Allied Services can improve your indoor air quality and remove built-up pet dander with our duct cleaning services. We also provide regular maintenance plans and other HVAC services including installation and repair of heating and cooling systems.
