Cool Your Home without Going Broke

Right now, we’re all enjoying the mild temperatures of spring. We’re opening up windows and letting that fresh breeze carry off the stale remains of winter. However, we all know that come July, open windows will not be an option as humidity and temperatures rise. You’ll be ready to turn on the air conditioning to stay cool. But just how can we use the AC without spending too much on utilities? Here’s a few tips we’ve found, courtesy of EnergyStar.gov.

1. Take good care of your HVAC.

Like any other piece of equipment, your air conditioner and HVAC system run at their best (and for a longer life span) if you take good care of them. That requires regular AC maintenance and system checks. At Allied Services, Inc., we recommend that you have your air conditioner serviced at least once a year, ideally before you need to use it. Be sure to also change your air filters regularly.

2. Invest in a programmable thermostat.

From midnight to mid-day, you could easily see a 20- to 30-degree difference in temperature. Additionally, you may be away from the house during certain portions of the day. A programmable thermostat can help you save money by maximizing hours when you don’t need your AC to work quite as hard. You can program it to automatically adjust to a higher temperature when you’re away.

3. Make sure your air ducts are sealed.

You don’t want to waste that cold air! If you suspect a leak in your HVAC duct work, then call a contractor who specializes in sealing duct leaks.

4. Invest in ENERGY STAR® equipment.

When it does come time to replace or upgrade your air conditioner, be sure to choose ENERGY STAR® approved options. An AC backed by ENERGY STAR® has been tested and has proven to be efficient.

5. Dress weather-appropriate.

Okay, this tip isn’t from EnergyStar.gov. It’s on us. To maximize your cooling dollars, we recommend that you set your thermostat to a temperature where you’re comfortable in your summer attire.
